| “X Marks the Place”
Ask students to look at their “X Marks the Place” page. As you read each statement below, ask students to put an X on the name of the state or country and write the number of the statement in the correct box on their page. After reading all 12 statements, discuss the answers to each statement with students. 1. This country is known for its JERK, this has no reference to the people. Jerk is a term used for spicy food. (Jamaica – 12 ) 2. Parrotfish are found here. These are not birds that swim in the ocean. (French Polynesia - 10) 3. A hundred million years ago this country was totally covered in tropical rainforests. Today, a person carrying a boomerang might greet you with “G’day” mate”. (Australia - 1) 4. “Opa” means, “it’s a blast” in this country’s language and is said while setting cheese on fire! (Greece - 3) 5. People in this country eat snails as often as Americans eat hamburgers. (France - 9) 6. This “south of the border” country has both food and climate that are “caliente” (hot). (Mexico - 6) 7. This state has the only active volcano that has erupted in the continental United States. (Washington - 8) 8. The largest State Forest System in the nation is managed by this state. It also has more lighthouses than any other state. (Michigan – 2 or 4) 9. When you arrive on this island you are greeted with “Aloha” and given necklaces of flowers known as leis. (Hawaii - 7) 10. Swahili is the national language of this country and Nairobi is its capital city. Many tourists visit here to go on ”safari”. (Kenya – 5) 11. Many people from this state often use their right hand as a map to show others where they live. (Michigan – 2 or 4) 12. The people of this great country love baseball, apple pie and the red, white and blue! May freedom forever ring! (USA- 11) |
